Life Course[Edit][]

Youth Years[Edit][]

Johannes Marius de Korver was born in 1883 at the Oude Binnenweg 91 in Rotterdam, as the second son of pakhuisknecht Engelbertus de Korver and House wife Johanna van Ooijen. His parents were from the Hague in 1879 moved, and opened two years after the birth of Jo, as he was called within the family, a hardware store and household items at the Kruiskade. On the place of the little shop is now the Hilton Hotel. [1]

De Korver learned at street football through a tennis ball, with which he with some friends on small areas around the Kruiskade and the Diergaarde Avenue practiced.Only after high school (HBS) the age of 17, he enrolled in at the small football club Constantia, who would later merge into the greater Perseverance. The Association played on the Shooters field, as well as Victoria, Celeritas, Sparta RotterdamFC Groningen and the General. Many of the smaller clubs had to contend with the fact that Sparta had a huge attraction on the footballers, and also De Korver got in 1902 after the Castle club. This time had partly to do with the fact that the first team of perseverance that year was subdivided into a distant southern League without much prestige. On the proposal of the gentlemen Konert, Dao is the defender and Bansah on 29 september unanimously as an active member of Sparta by the balloting Commission. [2]

Sparta Rotterdam[Edit][]

The rotterdammer made the first flowering of Sparta at the beginning of the twentieth century , and there was also partly the cause of it. He made his debut for the first team in a friendly against a team of Delft students. His first League game took place on October 19, 1902, the RAPagainst Amsterdam , at that time a big club in decline. A ruling by his opponent appeared in the newspapers, what could be called striking since sports during that period had less than the attention of the press. According to a player of RAP he had his hands volgehad at the Rotterdam gentlemen, "because besides those already fast Rein Boomsma, they had me there a boy, Kamanga or Korver or how those are called Mag. I promise youthat young man has what to offer. There we will hear more of. " [2]

It soon became apparent the opponent to get right. Led by Korver, who by his condition and match mentality was seen by many Spartans as a natural leader, improved performance significantly. For the 1903-1904 season was the then 20-year-old Defender to be appointed Captain . When in 1908 a professional trainer, Edgar Chadwick was appointed the British (who also coached the Dutch team ), Buck left reacted-he had no message to all tactics discussions of the Englishman and wanted rather just play football. [3While among the rest of the selection ever more animo came before the intense workouts and handy tips from Chadwick left his approach De Korver cold. The influence of the Englishman on the performance of Sparta, however, was quite noticeable; the club continued to grow and the top of the Division came closer.

Golden age[Edit][]

[1][2]Championship photo of Sparta from 1913. De Korver is the second from the left

In 1907 moved the Kale with Sparta by the shooters ' field to the Sportpark to the Princes Avenue, near the Kralingse Bos. Two years later the club won the Dutch title for the first time in the history. Many locals celebrated the Championship: it was after the very first VV Concordia Championship the first time a team from Rotterdam won the title. In the decades before that, usually to a Hague or Amsterdam club gone. The following season, Sparta won the silver ball, at that time the most important Cup tournament. Although the club was second behind the Haarlem HVV, but in the next five years could captain the Cup four consecutive times omhooghouden De Korver. The main competition for the Defender took place on May 19, 1912, on the last day of the season. The club had one run to be champion, but during much of the game, opponent Ajax 1-0. In the last minute, however, scored the equalizer with his knee The Korver, whereby the title went to the Rotterdam-team.

During this golden age was the Defender the spindle and playmaker of the team, which had the most prolific centre-forward as immediate task to guard the opponent 's, but at the same time to build up a free role, and had made on the field. Prior to an important game against HVV in 1911 gave trainer Chadwick, however, that De Korver throughout the contest at the dreaded jonkheer Constant Feith, midfield player, had to stay near the Hague. The rotterdammer reacted however unwillingly, and said: "I football I football football, because I find enjoyable, not to follow an opponent to a game long." Then he chose not to play, leaving the coaching staff saw itself forced to choose for the pivot of the reserves. De Korver had over time built up such amount of credit at the Sparta-supporters that he is such an action could afford.

In 1913 were conquered both the League Championship as the Silver Ball. It was also The Kale, then 30 years old, named honorary member of Sparta. Because of the threat of the upcoming first world war the following season, he was stationed in a garrison in Leerdam, where he was added to the 35th battalion 4th infantry company of the Landwacht. Sparta, which in addition to De Korver saw a number of important players are called, knew not to prolong the title. Despite protests from the Secretary of the club had the military command namely no message to League obligations, forcing the players a large number of races were missing. Though Defense showed its willingness to organize a League within the armed forces. Bok de Korver, the team that was led by Mr Des Tombes, delivered good performance in the twelve team League. [2the following year, however, most returned back to Sparta, and the Championship was recaptured on HVV.

Decline of the club[Edit][]

After 1915, however, continued persistency. In 1916, the year in which Sparta moved to the Castle , were still the NOC-Cup and the Championship of the Division West conquered, but the Kale, an important foundation within the team, was already half way through the thirty, and his condition decreased with the season. Though was his anniversary in 1918 -he played his 350th match for Sparta-reason for a big party, and a year later, on 13 may 1919, he was named by the Rotterdam football association honorary member. The rotterdammer, however, could not prevent his club in the 1920-1921 season from the highest Division relegated. Partly because of the winner's mentality of the then 39-year-old De Korver knew the Rotterdam-team to come back within a year. During a big victory party were two bronze statues unveiled in honor of the Kalam and President M.J. Overeynder. It had, however, little had not nearly the Defender can share in the revelry.

Escaped the death[Edit][]

[3][4]Press report from June 1922 in the homeland newspaper on the situation of the Kale

In the summer of 1922, just after celebrations, the Kale is seriously ill. He appeared to suffer from a neglected pneumonia, caused by the smoke of many cigarettes and cigars. His situation deteriorated rapidly and he had to be hospitalized. For a time he was shackled to the bed and the Rotterdam media reported almost daily on the public's favourite. On the announcement that he would not survive the possible throughout the country was shocked responded. Thanks to the help of doctor King and professor Snapper, which, however, he was also referee, recovered completely.

Shortly after his return to De Korver made known within considerable time want to stop reading. Although he was already 40, the communication came to many as a surprise. The Defender played his last official match on March 18, 1923, when Sparta in a sold out castle with Feyenoord won 1-0. Among the spectators were a large number of dignitaries, each the last honour wanted to prove to the club icon. The press attention for his farewell was still many times greater than that for his anniversary five years earlier. He had on his departure for the Rotterdam club played a total of 21 years, longer than anyone else. For this merit he was just after his last game appointed an honorary member of the Royal Dutch football association.

Board member of Sparta[Edit][]

After De Korver had stopped reading, he remained active in Sparta as a Board Member, technical matters. In this position he was responsible for the first team until 1944 , which earned him the nickname the twelfth man . In addition he was a member and later President of the silver ball-Commission, a trophy for the best player. In 1951 he presented this to Rinus Ta, the first great playmaker with Sparta after De Korver.

Since the beginning of the twentieth century was the former star football player active in the Rotterdam municipality, where over time he was moved up to Chief of the Office of physical education of the Department of education, a post he accepted it on 1 september 1948 to retire: he was 65 years old. During a farewell party at the City Hall of Rotterdam he got of the Federation of Dutch journalists offered a silver medal . Five years later, by a Committee led by the Dutch Olympic CommitteeChairman Karel Lotsy (great-nephew of his former team-mate at the Dutch team Dirk Lotsij) organized a ceremony. He was described by the Committee as follows: "Bok de Korver is an almost legendary figure become. He was a great pivot, who has had no equal. He was a sportsman in the best sense of the word and through his game a propagandist, to whom the Dutch football owes a lot. " [1]

Dutch national football team[Edit][]

De Korver belonged to the Group of footballers who was called up for the first ever official international of the Dutch national football team, on 30 april 1905 in Antwerp against Belgium. He would play for Orange to1913 .

First international games[Edit][]

Together with Dirk LotsijEddy de Neve and Reinier Beeuwkes made De Korver at the age of 22 for a 4-1 victory in the first international match in and against Belgium. Also for the second game, he was national coach Cees van Hasselt recalled. This would be the first official international match on Dutch soil. The game ended in a measured 4-0 win for Orange, De Korver made the first goal. The Rotterdam nieuwsblad, organizer of the contest, described the goal as follows:

[5]

De Korver, nation's captain, which by the beginning of the game has huge game shown, yes even Kamperdijk and Kessler has surpassed, takes the ball of Varma passes off, Davis, PAL and Heard, will be shooting, but the ball goes right past the purpose ... Already welcomes some of the public, but everything is back to start! Three minutes later retrieves the Kale about the same trick out, now with success, because for the goal come, he founds the ball and with a not too hard but sure shot has been given the lead by a rotterdammer Netherlands (1-0). [4

[6]

Cast away and returned[Edit][]

Also in the next two matches, both against Belgium, played the Kale with it. Both in Rotterdam as the Belgians Antwerp proved too strong: 0-5 respectively and maintained a 3-2-final standings reversed the proportions. Though grew the rotterdammer into a crowd favorite among the Dutch people. However, for the three games that followed, he was surprisingly not more called up by national coach Of Hasselt; the Defender becoming punished for the fact that he refused to come on training, because he exercises for a match unsportsmanlike was made.

The expulsion of the Kale was not long lasting, since there arose vehement protests among the football fans. Lost 12-2 In the away match against the English amateurs on 21 december 1907 , he was drafted again for that reason. He did have of the Federal coach no longer to work out, and so were both parties satisfied. In the match against Belgium, saw it, again from 2000 spectators the Kale of his career his only goal in the 85th minute he shot the make: 1-4 in the final standings, and certain. [5the other goalscorers that day were Cas Ruffelse and Jan Thomée (2 x) for Netherlands, and Maurice Vertongen to Belgian side.

England reports[Edit][]

His last match for the Dutch national team was again against England. On 13 november 1913 Orange with lost 2-1 at Hull. After the first world war had begun, there were no international games more played for a while, and when the war was over in 1918 was the rotterdammer for 35 years; He found himself not good enough anymore for the best eleven and decided no longer available. He would still be five years for Sparta club come true. At his retirement from the national football team he had played 31 games, and was the first who played as a goalkeeper. He would retain this title until the end of 1925, when Harry Dénis relayed to him the head of the leader board.

Personal[Edit][]

[9][10]The Oude Binnenweg in Rotterdam, where the Kale was born in 1883

At the beginning of the twentieth century as there is no professional football existed, it was necessary for soccer players to have a job at. From 1913 was The Kale on behalf of the liberal Liberty bond in the Rotterdam City Council. In addition, he was legal Secretary and head of the Department of sports and recreation for the municipality.

On 3 december 1914 married De Korver with the then 23-year-old Henriette Jeanette Fruin, the daughter of a prominent local wine merchant. The new couple moved to the Mayor meineszlaan 108. Daughter Annie was born In 1915, a year later, followed by son John. This would be a few years after the leave of his father at Sparta take its place as a playmaker in the team. To the performance of the Kale senior he knew not, however, match.

In 1939 , John sent to Dutch East Indies. When the Second World War began, the country was in the hands of the Japanese, which many Dutch people in so-calledJapanese POW camps stopped. De Korver junior was captured and penal labour sent to the Burma railway , where he got because of the poor conditions and ultimately tomalaria fever came to death. He was buried in the Kanchanaburi. The death of his son Buck hit deep: he became depressed and withdrew from public life. [3After his retirement in 1948 lived De Korver with his wife Henriette a reclusive existence in his house on the G.W. Citizen square. Though he remained a frequent visitor of the matches of Sparta.

Death[Edit][]

On 22 October 1957 De Korver died at the age of 74 from complications of a lung inflammation. His death was widely reported in the media, since he still great fame among sports enthusiasts. At his funeral said a knowledge:

[11]

I can still see his open face and sporting gesture when congratulating a partner after a defeat. At all sadness and doubt remains the certainty that Bok no enemies here on Earth fails. [6

[12]

De Korver was cremated in Crematorium Velsen in driehuis. The cremation drew hundreds of people from the sports world and a large number of representatives of social institutions.

Perception[Edit][]

De Korver was among the first group of internationals of the Dutch national football team, and was thus one of the first major national athletes who came to prominence. He can be considered the very first Dutch star footballer.

During his life[Edit][]

De Korver was partly responsible for the rise of Sparta Rotterdam at the beginning of the twentieth century, and had a large fan supporters behind itself within a short period of time. Already in 1913, after 11 years to have been employed by the club, he was voted an honorary member. In 1916 , his biography from. De Korver was then 33 and was the first Dutch footballer of who such a book work was written. [7]

The honouring of the Kale on 17 February 1918 prior to a game against the Football Association UVV Utrecht -it would be his 350th match in the red tint of Sparta-gave the national press again an opportunity to express themselves in superlatives about him. Some sports blades chose to bring out even for a extra Edition to the football qualities of the rotterdammer to boast. A pamphlet that came out that year described a fictional conversation between the then still small Princess Juliana and her mother Queen Wilhelmina.

[13]

"Mother," said Jahan recently to her Majesty, "mother, what our portraits are still often in the sheets, much more than other people." "No Jahan. There is one man, whose portrait is in the sheets more than ours. And that is Mr. Korver from Rotterdam. " "Oh, Yes," said Jahan, which really is a happy child, "but buck is also a soccer player and we are Queen, he tired?" The Queen was silent. "

[14]

One of the few who did not share the enthusiasm was the Kale itself, who felt that he had done nothing special . It made there the eulogies At his retirement as a footballer on no less. in 1923 again from the dedicated media about what he had meant for Dutch football. "With his passing comes a place open, which is not to play because a player if he does not know on the Dutch equal fields" wrote a journalist. [1]

In 1928 there was in Amsterdam a Dutch amateur Association football club was established, which in honor of the Kale-who at that time was no longer active as a footballer-BDK was baptized. The name choice was all the more remarkable since there is always competition had existed between sports people of Amsterdam and Rotterdam-team. The club no longer exists today.

After his death[Edit][]

Even after his death was the influence of the Kale on the Dutch football still noticeably. He is considered one of the club icons of Sparta, and in honor of him was on 1 april 2007 the stand on the west side of the Castle, home of the Rotterdam-based Association, renamed Bok de Korver stand. City poet Jules Deelder, supporter of the club, also performed the opening reciting his poem Sparta spirit, that begins with the wordsAs the spirit of Bok de Korver warming itself down the line. On the tribune is a plaque in memory of De Korver posted. [7]

In april 2008 was the rotterdammer by the independent supporters Journal of Sparta In The Winning Mood named the best Spartan of all time because of his performance for the club as a player and Board member. He remained thus players as Tonny van EdeRinus Ta and for Pim Doesburg . [3]

At Rotterdam, the way past sports complex Nieuw Terbregge, home to the Youth Academy of Sparta, named after De Korver. Also in Amsterdam is the Korverweg, a buck along the Eendracht Sports park of the clubsASV the GermanEendracht ' 82P and TSV Park City and SV Nieuw West. In Gouda is a Bok de Korver parking facilities located, and also the sports park of amateur club Forza Almere bears the name of the Defender.

Nickname[Edit][]

Within his family, John de Korver usually Jo mentioned, but beyond, he was primarily known as a Buck. How he has come to this nickname is unclear to this day-also check out indicated no longer De Korver itself has to know why he called. Supposedly the nickname originated in his time at perseverance, and referred them to his hard way of headlines or his stubbornness and intransigence. [1[7]

Character and properties[Edit][]

[15][16]De Korver in suits, with cigar

De Korver was known as a civilized and calm gentleman, who rarely made an offense and fourth exuberantly never a victory. Even at the height of his fame he downplayed its qualities, and any prices he got were quickly stored away. An example of this is the Grieg wreath he received prior to a game against England, on 24 March 1913, due to the fact that this would be his 30th International match. The game was won 2-1 and in the evening a number of players celebrated the victory in a cafe. Here tried the Kale of his wreath to come off by sliding it under the pool table. This failed because the café-owner chasing him ran with the message that he had forgotten his wreath.

According to De Korver served an opponent not to be defeated through physical force, but by speed and technical and tactical qualities. At the same time, he was averse to tactics discussions; the Rotterdam mainly wanted "just listening"[7he also did never participated in training, since these were unsportsmanlike in its Optics: not every footballer had equal time and opportunity to train, and so he would have been in favor towards his opponent as he took part to it. In his early days he did gymnastics and he occasionally ran some laps around the field, but intensive training with the rest of the selection was not paid to him. He nevertheless became one of the best players of his generation he thanked playing football with a tennis ball on the street as a child; the smaller ball was much more difficult to control and asked for more technical and tactical skill than the heavy leather footballs with which one played on the field. [8]

Despite its sporting qualities lived the Defender not exceptionally healthy. In the rest of a match he regularly smoked a cigarette to relax, and he regularly drank some evening get-togethers. Also early going to bed he found inappropriate and especially cheerless. [7]
