Frederic Etsou-Nzabi-Bamungwabi ( Belgian Congo , December 3 1930 - Leuven , January 6 2007 ) was the archbishop of Kinshasa , Congo-Kinshasa . He was the DRC's top Roman Catholic prelate from 1991 until his death in 2007.He was also a cardinal .

Biography edit ]Edit

Etsou was a member of the Congregation of the Immaculate Heart of Mary , also known as missionaries of CICM . He was a priest ordained on July 13 1958 . He studied sociology and theology in France and Belgium before returning to Congo in the late '60s.

Etsou was Archbishop of Mbandaka-Bikoro on 11 November 1977 and Kinshasa in 1990 . He was on June 28, 1991 proclaimed as Cardinal-Priest of S. Lucia a Piazza d'Armi by Pope John Paul II . In 2005 Etsou was one of the cardinals in the conclave that eventually Joseph Ratzinger as Pope Benedict XVI has chosen.
