Baumgartner began his racing career in Formula Renault BARC Winter Championship. He drove a Tatuus RC98. He was sixth in the championship. After this he rode with Cram Competition in the European Formula Renault and German Formula Renault. In the German Formula Renault he won three of the four races he rode, but because he had no German racing license, he could not get points for the championship. In the European Formula Renault he was third, here he was Antonio Pizzonia and Gianmaria Bruni show for itself. He stepped into200 on the German Formula 3 . This was less of a success, Dallara took him to a thirteenth place in the championship. The following year he raced in this class, he was seventeenth in the championship, he got 20 points in 18 races. He also rode the last seven races of the Formula 3000 championship.
